It's bigger than guns now. The Left made a huge mistake in letting its pundits and scholars start ranting about abolishing parts of the Bill of Rights, and even the Constitution as a whole. This set off a general alarm. Too many Americans have sworn to protect the Constitution from enemies foreign and domestic.
Question is, do Obama and the progressives continue to escalate? Or do they back off and hope we forget the past 20 days or so? Even if they do, don't count on a long term truce. Their attempts will simply revert to more stealthy tactics.
