Another gesture based on emotion to make people feel safe. Residents in Leicester, England are hanging knit objects from trees in a park. The hope is that colorful knitting will create a more cozy atmosphere and help reduce fear of crime, according to a BBC report.
How does a campaign intended to reduce fear, and perhaps reduce the caution taken by potential crime victims in a high crime area, do anything to actually deter crime?
There's been at least one armed robbery in Leicester since the knittings went up. And yes, the robbery apparently involved a handgun even though civilian handguns have been banned in the UK since 1997.
