Compare the current civilian hunger for firearms to some of the small arms production numbers of World War II, a time when production of most consumer goods ceased so industry could focus almost exclusively on war needs.

During the course of World War II, American factories churned out about 4 million M-1 Garands, the main battle rifle of that era, and another 6.5 million M-1 Carbines were made. During wartime production, Colt turned out approximately 629,000 Model 1911A1 pistols.
