Emanuel has reportedly agreed to bring a thousand of the young immigrants to Chicago, with the federal government paying costs associated with their care.
“While we have our own challenges at home, we cannot turn our backs on children that are fleeing dangerous conditions,” he said. “We will do our part to ensure that these children are given access to services and treated fairly and humanely.”
But wait...
Is Chicago any less dangerous than the conditions these children fled?
Is Chicago any less dangerous than the conditions these children fled?
Friday evening, seven Chicagoans were struck by gunfire in a drive by shooting on the city's west side. One of them, a 13-year-old boy, died. The Chicago Tribune says another six Chicagoans were shot the same evening in other shootings. Among the inured was a three-year-old.
Another nine people were shot, one of them fatally, on Thursday.
It's not uncommon for Chicago's weekend violence death toll to be in double digits. Eighty-two people were shot, 14 of them fatally, over the July 4th holiday weekend alone.
Seems to me, if I was an underage immigrant who came to the US allegedly to escape violence in my home country, bloody gang-infested Chicago is the last place I'd want to end up.
Update: Seems the 13-year-old killed Friday had quite a reputation, one that varies depending on who you talk to.
Again I ponder, are Obama's border crossers being sent to Chicago really going to be better off there?
